One of the nice things about a social networking site like Facebook is that it can bring one memories from the past. Joey Palmero (a.k.a. Matthew Maria) has uploaded a photo that includes myself, the whole Batch 2 and some Batch 1 Core Group of the Youth Marian Crusade circa 1978. The photo is labeled December 8, 1978 and may as well be our photo right after we were formally inducted into the YMC Core Group. The priest in the middle is — I think — the Provincial Superior of the Salesians of Don Bosco. The YMC Core Group was considered a sodality then.
Apart from the Salesian priest — I can’t remember his name now — the following members of the YMC Core Group appear by batches:
- Batch I:
- Peter, Martin, Matthias (Not in the photo: John and Aloysius)
- Batch II:
- Sergio, Mark(GSIS High School)
Edmund, Noel (Don Bosco — Kalentong)
Ricky, Joey, Abet, Joel, Felipe, Samuel, Ernie, Gerry, Noel, Orly (QCHS)
The formal induction was held at the Manila Cathedral where the Mass was presided over by Cardinal Sin. The Master of Ceremonies was Fr. Sonny Ramirez, OP who was also our Retreat Master during the week that preceded the celebration. The celebration was attended by our parents and a YMC membership that came from the public high schools of Quezon City and Manila. The Manila Cathedral was jampacked that morning.
There were nine of us coming from the Quezon City High School (Sct. Ybardolaza, Kamuning). In the summer that preceded SY 1977-78, a leadership summer camp was organized for the public high schools of Quezon City and Manila. I remember being approached by our third year adviser Mrs. Supnet, but I declined. During the regular school year (77-78), a new group began to make itself felt in our campus, the Youth Marian Crusade. Their first activity was a Mass celebrated at school. It was followed by a series of recollections for students. It was in one of these recollections that I found my way into their group. When Aloy gave us saint names during a Marian event held (at Roxas High School?), I was hooked. I got the name “Augustine”. I can still remember Aloysius saying to me: “You will be ‘Augustine’, a great sinner who became a great saint.”
When we became YMC Core Group members in December 1978, I was a student enrolled at the Conservatory of Music, University of Sto. Tomas. The following school year, 1978-79, all of us entered the UST Faculty of Philosophy as externi. Towards the end of that school year, when my “contract” with the YMC expired, I met the Augustinian friars — Fray Suyom, and the then students Ricky, Nap, Bay, Sobrevega — through Gerry Estrada (Luke). Together with him and two other Batch 3 members of the YMC, I presented myself to the then Master of Students, Fr. Rodolfo Sicio, OSA at the San Agustin Seminary in Makati. We got accepted. And the rest is, as you might say, history. Read this related item.
Thanks, Matthew, for the memories!
