Here is a nice quote about St. Joseph’s fatherhood mentioned within the context of priestly celibacy.
For St. Joseph, life with Jesus was a continuous discovery of his own vocation as a father. He became a faither in an extraordinary way, without begetting his son in the flesh. Isn’t this perhaps, an example of the type of fatherhood that is proposed to us, priests and bishops, as a model? Everything I did in the course of my ministry I saw as an expression of this kind of fatherhood –baptizing, hearing confessions, celebrating the Eucharist, preaching, admonishing, encouraging. For me these things were always a way of living out that fatherhood. (JPII, Rise…, p. 140)
St. Joseph is the chaste spouse of Mary and Patron of the Universal Church. The Augustinians have him as the Saint Protector of their Order. May St. Joseph pray for us and help us by his intercessions to be “Fathers” like him, nourishing and cherishing the Body of Christ as it is reflected in the humble Sto. Niño.
