In the Shadow of the Cross

{ Tags: \ May31 }

Here is a list of passages from the writings of Paul where the words “cross” and “crucified” appear.  The Christian has been claimed under the sign of the cross.  And Paul illustrates this in different ways:

Cross of Christ

1Co 1:23  But we preach Christ crucified: unto the Jews indeed a stumblingblock, and unto the Gentiles foolishness:
1Co 2:2  For I judged not myself to know anything among you, but Jesus Christ: and him crucified.
1Co 1:17-18  For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not in wisdom of speech, lest the cross of Christ should be made void.  For the word of the cross, to them indeed that perish, is foolishness: but to them that are saved, that is, to us, it is the power of God.
Ga 3:1  O senseless Galatians, who hath bewitched you that you should not obey the truth: before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been set forth, crucified among you?

The Word of the Cross is used to designate the way Paul has preached the gospel.  It may sound foolish to the wise men of the world, but it is actually the power of God for those who are being saved.

Ga 2:19  For I, through the law, am dead to the law, that I may live to God; with Christ I am nailed to the cross.
Paul describes in first person what it means to be dead to the Law:  to be crucified with Christ on the cross.

Ga 5:11  And I, brethren, if I yet preach circumcision, why do I yet suffer persecution? Then is the scandal of the cross made void.
The persecution that Paul suffers is a witness to the consistensy of what he preaches with the Gospel which is the Word of the cross.

Ga 6:12  For as many as desire to please in the flesh, they constrain you to be circumcised, only that they may not suffer the persecution of the cross of Christ.
Ga 6:14  But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ: by whom the world is crucified to me, and I to the world.

The circumcision of the flesh required by the false apostles is inconsistent with the mystery of our salvation in Christ.  For through the death of the Lord those under the yoke of the Law have been freed from it.

Eph 2:16  And might reconcile both to God in one body by the cross, killing the enmities in himself.
Col 1:20  And through him to reconcile all things unto himself, making peace through the blood of his cross, both as to the things that are on earth and the things that are in heaven.

Christ has reconciled the circumcised and the uncircumcised through the cross such that there is no longer any distinction between Jews and Gentiles.

Php 2:8  He humbled himself, becoming obedient unto death, even to the death of the cross.
Heb 12:2  Looking on Jesus, the author and finisher of faith, who, having joy set before him, endured the cross, despising the shame, and now sitteth on the right hand of the throne of God.

Death on the cross is the result of the Christ’s self-emptying and the expression of his complete obedience to God (context: Philippians 2:6-11).  The Christian should do well to look upon the Lord who endured his cross (cf. the Discipleship sayings in the Gospels)

Php 3:18  For many walk, of whom I have told you often (and now tell you weeping) that they are enemies of the cross of Christ

The enemies of the cross of Christ are the ones who have refused to be associated with the Passion of the Lord in their work by pandering to the approbation of the world.

Col 2:14  Blotting out the handwriting of the decree that was against us, which was contrary to us. And he hath taken the same out of the way, fastening it to the cross.

Crucified With Christ In Baptism
Ro 6:6  Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin may be destroyed, to the end that we may serve sin no longer.
1Co 1:13  Is Christ divided? Was Paul then crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul?
1Co 2:8  Which none of the princes of this world knew. For if they had known it, they would never have crucified the Lord of glory.
2Co 13:4  For although he was crucified through weakness, yet he liveth by the power of God. For we also are weak in him: but we shall live with him by the power of God towards you.
Ga 5:24  And they that are Christ’s have crucified their flesh, with the vices and concupiscences.
Ga 6:14  But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ: by whom the world is crucified to me, and I to the world.
