Romans 8:8-11: Life in the Spirit

{ Tags: , \ May31 }

Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

But you are not in the flesh;

on the contrary, you are in the spirit,

if only the Spirit of God dwells in you.

Whoever does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.

But if Christ is in you,

although the body is dead because of sin,

the spirit is alive because of righteousness.

If the Spirit of the one who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you,

the One who raised Christ from the dead

will give life to your mortal bodies also,

through his Spirit dwelling in you.  (Rom. 8:8-11)

The Christian’s baptism into Christ not only “transfers” him as it were from the Body of Adam into the Body of Christ.  By being “grafted” into Christ, he also is freed from the onus of the Law and the burden of sin in the flesh.  For now, the same Spirit which empowered Christ has also been poured into him, enabling him to live free of sin and not according to the flesh.  With his baptism then, the Christian is given a new life: life in the Spirit of Christ in contrast to his former condition, life under the law and under the wrath of God.  With this new life, the Christian can no longer go back to what he was before, i.e., to live “according to the flesh.”  Living according to the Spirit of Christ, he can now be assured that Death will not have the last word over Him.  Like Christ, he too is destined to the Resurrection.

The key concept here is the Spirit, the Breath of God, the Life-Giving Wind that renews creation.  It is the Wind that brings the skeletons in Ezekiel’s vision to life (Ezekiel 37).  It is the Breath of God  alluded to by the Psalmist when he writes:

“When you send forth your breath, they are created and you renew the face of the earth. (Ps. 104:30)”

It is the same Spirit that Christ breathed into his disciples  to give them new life (John 20:22; cf. Genesis 2:7). That  Spirit is poured into the Christian at his baptism so that now he can call God “Father” and  stand before the world free from sin and alive in Christ.
