I have completed two sessions with some of the fathers in a subdivision that is covered by our parish. We started last week with a session on “What does being male mean today?” This afternoon, I had two questions thrown at them: “What does it mean to be a religious male?” and “How does the religious male show his religiosity?” The session also included an introduction to the Book of Proverbs which I explained as one of the books in the Scriptures which was written specifically for males.
There was a suggestion that the group become Catholic Faith Defenders. I like the idea too. In fact, it was one of the ideas that motivated me to start the group anyway. But I also explained that apologetics must derive from a Catholic spirituality that is “male.” I don’t want to make our sessions degenrate into a mere exercise of intelligence. I wish that my “wards” would discover that maleness has a spirituality. Otherwise, our being in Church will not have a motivation that goes deeper than “respectability.”
